A tip when searching: “home care Darlington” brings up bathroom and heating firms with “Homecare” in their names. Search for “care at home” or “domiciliary care” instead, or use the council’s Livingwell Darlington directory, which lists around 20 home care services. The council’s own home care page confirms you can contact independent agencies directly and check them on the CQC register.

Will Darlington Council pay?

Darlington sets out the national means-test rules clearly on its “capital limits” page, with its own worked example. For 2026/27:

Your savings and investmentsWhat happens
Over £23,250You pay the full cost. You can still have the free needs assessment and advice.
£14,250 to £23,250The council helps. You pay £1 a week for every £250 above £14,250, the council’s example is £15,000 of savings adding £3 a week, plus a contribution from income.
Under £14,250Savings are ignored. You contribute from income only, keeping at least £241.45 a week if you’re over State Pension age.

Before the full assessment you can try Darlington’s online indicative calculator, which shows roughly what your contribution would be. The Financial Assessment Team then does the full assessment, taking off disability-related expenses, and contributions are collected by monthly Direct Debit. You can appeal if you think the figure is wrong. If you’d rather arrange your own care, you can take your personal budget as a direct payment; the Darlington Association on Disability publishes a list of care agencies that accept them. Your home is not counted for care in your own home.

How to get a care needs assessment in Darlington

  1. Ring Adult Social Care on 01325 406111 (Monday to Thursday 8.30am–5pm, Friday to 4.30pm) or complete the online request-for-support form. A relative, friend or GP can ask on your behalf. Out of hours, the Emergency Duty Team is on 01642 524552.
  2. The contact team works out what’s needed, sometimes equipment, advice or a reablement referral is enough; otherwise a social worker carries out a full assessment.
  3. The assessment is a conversation about what you can manage and what matters to you, usually about an hour, at home or by phone. Ask for a carer’s assessment for anyone looking after you.
  4. If you have eligible needs you get a support plan and personal budget, then the financial assessment sets your contribution. Allow four to six weeks from first contact; say if it’s urgent. If you’re in hospital, the RIACT team (01325 342111) arranges support for going home.

Note down a typical week beforehand, what you need help with, how long it takes, what a bad day looks like. Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington (0300 30 20 100, Bradbury House, Beaumont Street West) offers information and advice and can help you prepare.
